Scotmid Co-op Store Transformation with Herbert Retail

The Challenge

Traditional paper-based Shelf Edge Labels (SELs) have been a mainstay for retailers, used to display prices and promotions. While functional, these labels require frequent manual replacement to reflect changes in prices and promotions—a time-consuming and costly process.

The Solution

To address this inefficiency, Scotmid Co-op partnered with Herbert Retail to implement cutting-edge Electronic Shelf Edge Labels (eSELs). These vibrant, crystal-clear labels enable instant updates through fully networked hardware and software applications, eliminating the costs and labour associated with traditional SELs.

The Implementation

After a successful proof of concept, Scotmid committed to upgrading its entire store estate from paper-based SELs to eSELs. Herbert Retail enlisted RAS to provide the necessary resources and expertise to execute the transformation, aligning with Scotmid’s “What a Good Job Looks Like” (WAGJLL) standards.

Key steps in the implementation included:

  • Extensive Training: RAS team members underwent specialised training to ensure they could deliver a seamless eSEL installation process. A Lead eSEL Engineer was appointed to oversee each store’s transition.
  • Efficient Teamwork: Small, agile teams worked through the night to remove old shelf edging and install new edging designed for the eSELs. Each eSEL was placed meticulously according to store plans, paired with the appropriate product via barcode scanning.
  • Proactive Leadership: The Lead Engineer began shifts an hour early to ensure all equipment was on-site, coordinate with Scotmid store teams, and liaise with Herbert Retail’s remote engineers to complete preparatory tasks. This groundwork enabled the team to execute upgrades efficiently.
  • Staff Training: Upon completing the installation at each store, the Lead Engineer provided an additional hour of hands-on training for store colleagues. This ensured staff were equipped with the knowledge and confidence to operate the eSELs effectively.

The Result

Over the course of the project, the RAS implementation team delivered 724 shifts across 153 stores, completing a full upgrade to eSEL technology. This significant operational advancement has not only streamlined in-store processes but also empowered Scotmid teams to embrace a modern, more efficient way of working.

The successful partnership between Herbert Retail, Scotmid, and RAS exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in driving meaningful change within the retail sector.
